Oliver, Summer 1998

This page is a 'progress report' on Oliver since his web site was first started (November, 1997).

At 6 years Oliver can -

  • use the toilet at home and at school
  • write his name and lots of other words unaided using a pencil
  • (his handwriting is very large and faint) and type them on the computer
  • use word cards to make 'sentences' and copy them
  • do simple addition and subtraction sums by himself using counters
  • has memorised 2x, 3x and 10x tables
  • draw basic shapes and figures when given instructions to follow
  • ask for most things that he needs
  • (examples are "can I have a drink please", "play upstairs", "need some help")
  • make simple comments / observations about objects and situations
  • describe in terms of 'what' and 'where'
  • ask a few spontaneous questions - "what's that for?", "and then. . . .?"
  • (means 'what is going to happen next?')
  • join in simple board and table games such as snakes & ladders and lotto
  • on rare occasions, sleep for about six hours without waking!
  • go in to school quite happily but he will often push others in order to be the first
  • Class 1W

  • run around the playground with the other children
  • eat his lunch in the noisy school dining room with his 'friends'
  • sit happily with the whole class during story-time
  • 'answer' or respond to closed type questions when asked
  • approach new situations with less anxiety

Ollie's first school trip

We are very pleased with Oliver's progress and believe much of this is due to the work of his class teacher, special needs assistant and support of the school.
