These pages have been created as a subsidiary of Autism And Oliver. Oliver's parents believe that a gluten free and casein free diet has had a positive effect on his wellbeing and health but recognize that such a diet is not suitable for all. They wish to share knowledge and provide some direction for others who are wanting to investigate and learn more about a gfcf diet. Oliver, who has autism, has followed a gfcf diet for more than 20 years, with the advice and support from his Consultant and Dietitian. Visitors to Autism And Oliver are able to follow Oliver's life from the age of 5, better understand his achievements and difficulties, and see his self-esteem and confidence grow by undertaking a healthy lifestyle through physical exercise and sporting activity. Material on this site comprises content derived from historic scientific study or anecdotal accounts relating to diet which excludes both gluten and casein as one possible strategy to alleviate the symptoms of ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder) or related pervasive developmental disorders. However, scientists and health professionals are not in agreement about the benefits of following a gfcf diet. There is a need to conduct more rigorous research studies involving larger numbers of people over longer time periods, also further investigation of different subsets of individuals on the autism spectrum (such as those with gastrointestinal problems or those with allergies to gluten and/or casein) to determine who might benefit most from the gfcf diet. At present, official government health department recommendation is to avoid the gfcf diet. Any decision to undertake a dietary intervention must lie solely with the person with ASD or with those having responsibility for their care. It is strongly recommended that anyone considering a dietary intervention seek the advice and support of their Medical Practitioner and if possible, a knowledgeable dietician or nutritionist.
